Professor Chalupnik Retires

Professor Emeritus James D. Chalupnik

A native Texan, Professor James D. Chalupnik received his BSME from Texas Technical College in 1953. He served as a naval officer from 1953 to 1955, then returned to Texas to pursue a graduate education at the University of Texas. During this period he rose from teaching assistant to instructor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. From 1958 to 1961 he worked as a scientist and supervisor in the instrumentation research group at the Lockheed Missile and Space Company Research Laboratory in Palo Alto, California, where he first became involved in acoustics and noise control.
He received his MS in engineering mechanics from the University of Texas in 1960 and his PhD in 1964. He was hired as Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington in 1964, and moved to Seattle to begin a distinguished 31 year career as a university professor and researcher. In 1968 he was promoted to Associate Professor, and to Professor in 1977.
He is active in a number of national professional societies, including the Acoustical Society of America, the Society for Experimental Stress Analysis, and the Instrument Society of America, for all of which he served at various levels up to and including president of the local chapter. He is a registered professional engineer, a Founding Member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering, a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, and a member of Sigma Xi honorary scientific society. He has organized several national and international meetings on instrumentation and noise control and has held numerous short courses on these subjects. Chalupnik has edited three books and authored over 50 technical papers. He has received international honors, such as a Subvention du Voyage (stipend for travel in France) by the Ministére des Affaires Étrangeres of the Republic of France in 1988 and a Guest Professorship at Procesteknisk Institut of Danmarks Techniske Højskole, (the Danish Technical University) in 1990-91. He is the sole American member of an International Technical Committee that is drafting an ISO (International Standards Organization) standard for the measurement of roadway noise. He has also held many university and department positions, including associate chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering since 1986.
Professor Chalupnik will remain with the department this fall as coordinator for the upcoming Accredation Board for Engineering and Teaching visit.
The faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department unanimously passed the following resolution upon the occasion of Professor Chalupnik's retirement:
Professor James D. Chalupnik retires on June 15, 1995, after 31 years of service to the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
His career has been distinguished by research and instructional contributions in the fields of dynamics, vibrations, and materials characterization. With others, he initiated both undergraduate and graduate courses in the department in acoustics and environmental noise.
An exceptional experimentalist, Professor Chalupnik widely shared his expertise with his grateful colleagues. Countless experimental programs and virtually every laboratory in the department have benefited from his knowledge of instrumentation and data interpretation. He was among the first in the department to recognize the role of real-time computing in empirical research.
In addition, during the past nine years, he assumed the difficult administrative duties of the associate chairman.
In recognition of his outstanding service, this faculty recommends that Professor James D. Chalupnik be appointed Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
