Student Awards

The UW student chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers received the Allied Signal Outstanding Collegiate Branch Award for 1995-96. This award, which is given to Class I student branches with 75 or more members, consists of a plaque plus a $500 check which the chapter can use for scientific, professional or educational purposes. Sharing in the credit for bringing this honor to the University are David K. Chen, chair of the student chapter, other officers and members of the branch, and Associate Professor Dale E. Calkins, faculty advisor.

Senior Christiann Howard won a $1000 scholarship from the Seattle Area Chapter of the Association for Women in Science. This scholarship was one of three awarded to UW women demonstrating a combination of academic success, financial need and motivation to pursue a career in science.

Junior Leslie Jonsson was one of nine students nationally who were chosen to receive the ASME Auxiliary's Silvia W. Farny Scholarship. Each student selected received a certificate and a $1500 check.

Erika Kirchberger, MSME candidate, was selected by the UW Women in Engineering Scholarship Committee to receive the $2500 Alcoa Scholarship for 1996-97.

Junior Kevin Nguyen was a member of a twelve person team of UW engineering students which won first place in the Lunar Construction Contest at Space 96, a conference sponsored by NASA and the American Society of Civil Engineers. The team was required to design a remote-controlled robot to install radiation shielding around the first permanent moon base. Evaluation was on the basis of a written report, an oral presentation, and the design, performance and reliability of scale model equipment.

Based on her academic achievement and educational goals, Jessica Yellin, Ph.D. candidate studying under Associate Professor Steve Shen, was selected to receive the NSF GEE Fellowship, a $15,000 stipend to assist her in the pursuit of her doctorate.
