Mechanical Engineering admission

Our mission in undergraduate education is to provide the resources and educational opportunities that prepare men and women for careers in Mechanical Engineering practice and research, and to foster the development of the leadership skills that are the basis of effective contributors to society.

Program Educational Objectives
  1. Success in the Profession. Our goal is success for our graduates in industry, research, and academic careers by virtue of skills and attributes learned in our program. The graduates succeed in their professional and academic positions by:
    1. using fundamental science and analysis to solve engineering problems,
    2. successfully executing engineering designs, and
    3. performing effectively in design teams, in the use of management tools, and through effective oral, written and graphical communication.

  2. Contribution to society. Graduates should be critical thinkers in the tradition of the broad liberal arts education. They succeed in this goal by being able to:
    1. think critically, in the sense of broadly educated individuals (i.e., be informed evaluators/consumers of information),
    2. perform independent, informed analysis on issues inside and outside of technology, and
    3. continue lifelong learning.
The BSME degree is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012 - telephone: (410)347-7700.

The application deadline for autumn quarter admission to the Mechanical Engineering Department is July 1. All applications are submitted online through the College of Engineering. To view the online application and instructions please visit the College of Engineering Admissions Page.

Graduate Admissions

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers the degrees Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME), Master of Science in Engineering (MSE), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). You should begin the application process by reviewing our summary of these degrees, the application procedures, the deadlines, and our admission requirements.

Formal application to the Department is made through the Graduate School's online application. The procedure identifies those materials to be delivered electronically and those requiring hard copies. Hard copies of the Fellowship/Assistantship Application, and the PhD Application forms are needed where applicable.
