Mechanical Engineering

Master's Degree Requirements and Procedures

Quick Links
  1. Select a faculty supervisor. The GPC is assigned as faculty supervisor for all Master's Degree students when they enter the program. Before the end of the first quarter students must select their own faculty supervisor from the Mechanical Engineering faculty.
  2. Elect the thesis or non-thesis option. Students desiring research experience and students who plan to continue into the Ph.D. program are encouraged to select the thesis option. Part-time students, EDGE students and those desiring additional coursework normally choose the non-thesis option. By the end of the second quarter students should choose their option. The choice is indicated by which "Plan of Study" for is filed.
  3. Submit a "Plan of Study" form. A Plan of Study form is available for thesis and non-thesis options, and must be approved and signed by the student's faculty supervisor before being returned to the Graduate Advising Office by the end of the second quarter. Students should meet with their faculty supervisors at least once every quarter to confirm the schedule of courses being taken and to approve any revisions of this plan.
Please note: EDGE and part-time students need to satisfy the first requirement by the end of the quarter in which they first complete nine credits in the MS program, and the last two requirements during the quarter they complete 18 credits.
