Interviewing
Prepare for an interview like you prepare for a test. Research a company prior to an interview with the Employer Resources File in the Center for Career Services. Know the job description and study engineering books of major topic areas. If a job is related to a class you have taken, find your textbook and do a few homework problems during the week prior to your interview. If the job requires CAD, refresh your skills in CAD the week before the interview. Make sure you know how to get to the interview site on time. Try to be calm. It may mean not concentrating on your interview for the 24 hours prior, but instead relaxing by going to a movie the night before. These are some of the same strategies you would use before taking an exam. You don't need to memorize things but your ability to reason is important.- Be prompt.
- Plan to be there early, rushing to get to the interview will leave you rushed and not give you the chance to relax and focus your thoughts on your strengths.
- Dress conservatively.
- Be courteous to everyone you meet at the interview. The receptionist may be asked to give his/her first impression of you.
- Be positive; practice this if you are not a positive person.
- Link the experiences you have had in the past to the job for which you are interviewing.
- During the interview talk about some of your successful projects (bring a design project).
- Take notes with you. Ask questions about the company that are important to you, but stay away from questions regarding salary and benefits.
- Mention all of your hobbies, accomplishments, and organizations you belong to and awards on your resume. Bring a list to give to your interviewer.
- After an interview send a thank you note.
