Research
The Mechanical Engineering faculty is organized into four interest groups according to research specialty: Energy and Fluids, Mechanics of Materials and Manufacturing, Systems and Dynamics, and Design and Manufacturing. Our faculty members conduct research-both individually and in collaboration with other faculty in Mechanical Engineering and other departments-in these four interest groups across four different thrust areas: Energy and the Environment, Health Care, Information Technologies, and Manufacturing.Examples of faculty research projects include work in microcellular materials, solid freeform fabrication, shape memory alloys, hydrogen- and solid oxide-based fuel cells, modeling of nonpremixed turbulent combustion, the mechanics of traumatic spinal injuries as well as development of injury prevention techniques, and the design and fabrication of polymeric composite materials and structures.
