1990s

Dr. Lisa M. Gartland (Ph.D. '95) started her own firm, PositivEnergy, in Oakland, CA, in 1998, following the completion of her post-doctoral fellowship at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The firm, which concentrates on community energy conservation, is quite successful, with various projects for the City of Berkeley, doing research and demonstration projects on cool roofing, and working to develop energy conservation guidelines for Christmas in April, a national building rehabilitation program for low-income seniors and the disabled. She is also the Director of the Sacramento Cool Community Program, a pilot for the EPA's Heat Island Reduction Initiative.

Professor Richard A. Layton, P.E., (Ph.D. '95) is an Assistant Professor at North Carolina A&T State University. Last fall he was invited to present a 2-week intensive course in multidomain modeling and simulation of dynamical systems at Tampere University of Technology in Finland. The course was based on his recently published book "Principals of Analytical Systems Dynamics".

Rosalina Parwono (BSME '94) returned to her native Indonesia after graduation, working as CAD Engineering Assistant Manager with the power generation segment of Asea Boveri Brown, Inc. (ABB). In April 1999 she accepted a new position as Turbine Balance Plant Engineer with ABB Power Generation, Inc., Richmond, Virginia.

Joseph R. Paulsen (BSME '94) is a mechanical engineer employed at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Washington.

John Routh (BSME '93) has received his license as a professional engineer (Civil Discipline) in the State of Texas. George E. Angelou (BSME '92) is now working for the Federal Aviation Agency in the Seattle area. Following graduation he worked for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers for 6 years performing design work (HVAC, fuel systems, pump stations, controls, etc.).

Robert S. Beale, P.E. (BSME '92) is a Senior Project Engineer with Williams Controls, Inc., Portland, Oregon. He passed the Professional Engineers exam in mechanical engineering and has been promoted to supervisor of the R&D group.

Greg A. Moran (aka Lull) (BSME '91) is an Engineering Manager with Mitsubishi Silicon America, Salem, Oregon.

1980s

Jill A. Connell (BSME '88), mechanical engineer, has joined the Seattle office of Coffman Engineers.

Thai Q. Vu (BSME '83) is a Manager of Customer Service Engineering for The Boeing Company, Long Beach, CA. He has also worked in the Design, Analysis, and Production/Liaison departments. He earned a masters degree in Engineering Management in 1991, holds a patent on "Floating Gang Channel/Nut Assembly," and has applied for two additional patents.

John E. Carlson (BSME '82) of Art Anderson Associates, Bremerton, was elected 1999/2000 president of the Washington Society of Professional Engineers, West Puget Sound Chapter.

Erik A. Larsen (BSME '81), owner of Larsen Equipment Design, received two industry awards recognizing his achievement in the contact lens machinery manufacturing industry. He was awarded the Industry Enhancement Award at the annual meeting of the Contact Lens Manufacturers Association in October 1998 and the Technology Award for outstanding contributions to the industry by the European Federation of the Contact Lens Industry at their annual meeting in Antwerp, Belgium, in November 1998.

1970s

Hok Lai Ong (BSME '77) has joined McGowan Broz Engineers in Bellevue as senior mechanical engineer.

Gregory P. Bruce (BSME '77), mechanical engineer, has joined the Bellevue office of HTNB Corporation.

1960s

Jerald A. Williams (MSME '68) was selected as Vice-President of the Consulting Engineers Council of Washington, Seattle, WA, for 1999-2000.

Gary J. Doolittle (BSME '68) has joined McGowan Broz Engineers, Bellevue, as mechanical engineer.

Lee A. James (BSME '59, MSME '65) has retired from Westinghouse Electric Corporation and now makes his home in the Olympia area. He worked for The Boeing Company for 9 years, Westinghouse Hanford Company in Richland, WA for 20 years and Westinghouse Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, West Mifflin, PA for 11. Most of his career was spent in the area of fracture mechanic applications, and he continuing to consult in that area in retirement.
