Curkendall, Anton Endowed Scholarships Established
During the past year, two new endowed scholarship funds have been established to benefit undergraduate students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The Thomas L. and Patricia M. Curkendall Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by Thomas L. (BSME, '46) and Patricia M. Curkendall in appreciation for the education they received in Seattle area schools, including the University of Washington, and as a tribute to their families' historic ties to Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Mr. Curkendall's parents moved to Seattle from the Midwest in 1919. Mrs. Curkendall's grandparents were homesteaders from Illinois, Oklahoma and Denmark. Both attended Seattle Public Schools through high school. Mr. Curkendall entered the College of Engineering at UW in 1940. Mrs. Curkendall was a student in the UW College of Fine Arts during 1942-43. Mr. Curkendall entered the U.S. Army in 1943, receiving his wings and a commission in 1944. During his thirty-year career in the U.S. Air Force he qualified as a Command Pilot and flew over 40 different types of aircraft. He also spent many years working in Research and Development for the Air Force. He retired in 1972 and he and his wife returned to the Seattle area. For several years Mr. Curkendall flew charters and also worked in experimental flight testing for The Boeing Company.
The G. Myron Anton Endowed Scholarship was established by G. Myron Anton (BSME, '55). Mr. Anton was a member of Sigma Pi fraternity. He was in the Army ROTC program and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers upon graduation. He worked first for Lockheed, then joined The Boeing Company in 1955. He worked on a number of military and civilian aviation projects at Boeing, including the B-52, Minuteman missile, the Manned Orbiting Laboratory, the 747, 757 and 767. He became Director of 747 and 767 Marketing Management programs in 1985.
He took early retirement in February 1989, founding and operating his own aviation consulting firm. In early 1992 he joined Boullioun Aviation Services, Inc., as Executive Vice President Technical Services. Mr. Anton died in April, 1998. This endowed scholarship fund, which was established by gifts from Boullioun Aviation Services, Inc., The Boeing Company, and other friends of Mr. Anton, will be a continuing memorial to his life and work.
