Updates: PEMM and MSE
The Program in Engineering and Manufacturing Management (PEMM) -- an interdisciplinary dual-degree graduate program between the College of Engineering and the School of Business Administration is successfully preparing an expanding number of students for high-tech challenges of the new millennium. With recently updated curriculum, PEMM students are able to streamline their studies along specific engineering tracks, such as bioengineering technology or environmental engineering, after receiving invaluable training in business administration during their first year. Thanks to the energy and commitment of the two directors, Mamidala Ramulu from Mechanical Engineering, and Kamran Moizadeh from the School of Business Administration, the program has grown from four students in 1994 to twenty students currently. Sixteen students entered in Autumn 1998, and four students will finish their theses in the Summer of 1999. Alumni form the program have consistently been recruited for prestigious positions in high-tech industry. After its modest beginnings, PEMM is rapidly becoming recognized as a program that is able to meet needs of technology firms in an increasingly complex global marketplace.
The Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) degree was developed in partnership with The Boeing Companyand the its employees. This program provides an interdisciplinary engineering degree with specialization in Manufacturing Engineering. The program's emphasis is providing education on integrated systems of manufacturing including, but not limited to, large scale systems and integration of product design with manufacturing processes. This educational program is provided via distance education through Televised Instruction in Engineering (TIE).
Three ME faculty members, Prof. Ramulu, Associate Director and Advisor, Jim Riley, and Vipin Kumar, in collaboration with Industrial Engineering faculty have developed the curriculum for this program, which officially started in Fall 1997. The enrollment has now reached to 92 students. The program also provides the faculty an opportunity to work in Boeing during the summer under Faculty Development Fellowships. Professors Reinhall and Kumar were the recipients of fellowships in summer 1998.
