Student Awards

July, PhD canidate Jonathan Salem received an ASTM Award of Appreciation for his contributions to the development of PS070-97 Test Methods for the Determination of Fracture Toughness of Advanced Ceramics at Ambient Temperature. Mr. Salem was the former task group leader in the fracture toughness effort, which culminated several years of organizational effort, techinical analysis and administrative coordination. Since PS070-97 is a provisional ASTM standard , Mr. Salem is still involved in refining this standard (full approval expected Fall 1998).

The SAE Collegiate Branch at the University of Washington has been selected as a recipient of the 1997 Allied Signal Outstanding SAE Collegiate Branch award. The award consists of a plaque and a $300 check to be used for scientific, educational or professional purposes consistent with the overall goals and initiatives of SAE. Credit for bringing this honor to the department is shared by the faculty advisor, Associate Professor Dale Calkins; the 1997 chair of the Collegiate Branch, Ryan C. Hill; and other officers of the collegiate branch.
