Mechanical Engineering

Graduate Student Open House Information

Dear Prospective Graduate Student:

We are pleased that you have chosen to consider Washington for your graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering. Choosing a graduate school is a difficult decision and a major commitment. We hold our annual graduate visitation day with the goal helping you make this decision in the most informed way possible. This year the visitation day is Thursday, April 3.

An agenda is available. We start at 8:30 with a continental breakfast, followed by a brief introduction to the department and the degree programs. The morning and afternoon are devoted to drop-in visits to laboratories and with faculty. We will provide you with a schedule of when the various labs and faculty will be open at the morning meeting. Lunch will be with faculty and graduate students in your technical interest area. To give you an idea of how the day flows we are providing the schedule from last years visit.

We hope the Thursday date will allow you to explore Seattle a little over a long weekend if you so desire.

We have included a number of links. First, there is a logistics sheet that identifies hotels in the University District; it also provides information on transportation from the airport. We also have included a campus map showing our building, the site of the breakfast meeting, and the location of the local hotels. Finally, we have included the agenda.

We hope you will be able to join us. Please let us know if you are coming by replying to megrad@u.washington.edu by March 21. If April 3 does not work out for you, we are open to individual visits. Just let us know what day you would like to come. Note that our spring break is the week of March 24, and as many faculty are off campus this is not a good time to come.

We do have funds to partially offset the cost of travel (up to $300 for reimbursement against the cost of airfare). These awards are available to students who have been offered admission. If you want to apply for travel reimbursement, please do so in your RSVP message.

Please let me know if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you on April 3, and we also look forward to the chance that you may join us in the fall.

Sincerely,

John Kramlich Professor Associate Chair for Academics kramlich@u.washington.edu
