Quick Links
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington houses one of the major mechanical engineering graduate programs in the United States. Approximately 165 graduate students study in the department, including 115 full-time students, and 50 part-time students working full-time in industry. In addition, there are approximately 350 junior and senior undergraduate students enrolled in the department, with over 150 baccalaureate degrees awarded annually.

The number of full-time faculty members associated with the department is 29. The faculty are divided into 4 teaching interest groups: Energy and Fluids; Design; Mechanics, Materials and Manufacturing; and Systems and Dynamics. Faculty research projects include porous materials, solid freeform fabrication, shape memory alloys, fabrication of polymeric materials, modeling nonpremixed turbulent combustion, and much more .

The mission of the Mechanical Engineering Department is to contribute to the advancement and well-being of society. We accomplish this through our excellence in teaching and research, which focuses on the integration of technological systems to solve practical problems. Essential to this mission is an environment that stimulates faculty and students to reach their highest potential and motivates life-long learning. Teaching and research shall reflect the technical diversity of mechanical engineering and meet the needs of our constituents. As a result of our individual and collective strengths, our teaching, research, graduates, and expertise will be sought after locally, nationally, and internationally.
