Biography
(BSME 1941) received an Alumni Achievement Award at the Dean's Recognition Dinner held on May 13, 1993. The dinner, sponsored by a variety of corporations and Dean's Club Members, is an annual celebration of outstanding members of the College of Engineering student body, faculty, and alumni community. Mr. Challman was honored for his distinguished technical and business career.After graduating from the ME Department, Mr. Challman enlisted in the Navy and served as the youngest chief engineer during World War II. He then joined Honeywell Corporation where he worked to develop sensors and recording devices. Realizing that a revolution in the recording industry was about to take place, Mr. Challman co-founded the Memorex Corporation in 1959. As Vice President, he led Memorex to $100 million in net annual sales before his departure and return to Seattle in 1964.
Upon returning to Seattle, Mr. Challman joined Simmons Precision Products and later became a partner in Galt Enterprises. He is currently the co-owner of Arnie's restaurant with his son.
For several years, Mr. Challman assisted the College of Engineering as Coordinator of Industry Relations. In this capacity he provided a link between research faculty and the business investment community while receiving only $1 annual compensation.
