Biography

Professor Daly continues to work with colleagues in the Physics Department at the University of Washington on the design and construction of particle detector subsystems for large particle accelerators at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland and at Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois.

At CERN, this work involves the design, fabrication and installation of 240 muon detector chambers for the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC is scheduled to start running in late 2007.

At Fermilab the UW team has designed and fabricated a sophisticated carbon fiber/epoxy support structure for an additional layer that is being added to the silicon tracker system in the D0 detector. This scheduled to be installed into the existing detector in April 2006.

Professor Daly's original research activity is in biomechanics; in particular, the mechanical behavior of living tissues and their interaction with a variety of prosthetic devices, both internal and external.
