Biography

Professor Ramulu's teaching and research interests include mechanics of materials, fracture mechanics, fatigue, and advanced manufacturing processes. His main research activities focus on the fields of solid and fracture mechanics, and their applications in manufacturing engineering.

His research investigates micro-mechanics of manufacturing, with a view to enhance crack nucleation for optimal material removal; development of secondary processing methodology to control crack nucleation in ceramic and metal matrix composite materials; macro- and micro-mechanics modeling of material removal processes under dynamic conditions; evaluation of polycrystalline diamond tool's performance in machining polymer composites and mechanics of cutting processes; fractal approach to crack branching; mixed-mode crack propagation; and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics.

Prior research work includes development of crack curving and crack branching criteria, numerical and experimental analyses of small and long fatigue cracks in light weight metals under mixed mode loading conditions, subcritical crack growth of an artificial flaw, development of cost- effective welding methodology to weld aluminum-lithium alloys, and machinability of ceramic and metal matrix composites.

Professor Ramulu is a Presidential Young Investigator and a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
