Admissions requirements and prerequisites for the Graduate Certificate in I-BEAM (Intelligent Battery Engineering and Automated Manufacturing) at UW.

Minimum requirements

Degree

  • Strongly recommended: Previous degree majoring in engineering, physics, chemistry, or a closely related discipline.
  • Other majors will be considered if required prerequisite coursework has been completed. 

GPA and coursework

  • Applicants need a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average on a 4-point scale from an accredited school and meet specific coursework requirements.
  • Undergraduate coursework in calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and physics. 
  • Undergraduate coursework or work experience with writing computer code in any language.

English proficiency

English language proficiency for non-native English speakers must be demonstrated according to the requirements in Graduate School Policy 3.2. Not required if already enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Washington. 

If you do not meet some or all of the minimum requirements, please use the personal statement to address these issues.

  • If you have been out of school for more than 5 years, or if your most recent degree is not in a closely related subject, use your personal statement or resume to highlight how you have kept up your math and coding skills, for example through work or continuing education.
  • If you do not use math and coding in your current work, consider taking a course at UW as a graduate non-matriculated student to brush up on skills.
  • If you received low grades in prerequisite courses or are missing prerequisite courses on transcripts, use your personal statement to explain how you have gained or strengthened these skills through your career or continuing education.
  • If you have not taken the prerequisite courses, consider taking them at UW as a non-matriculated student.

Application materials

Transcripts from all colleges and universities attended

These may be unofficial transcripts for application, but official transcripts will need to be submitted if offered admission. If you received any previous degrees from a school outside the US, provide an English- language translation of your transcripts, if the originals were not in English. Also make sure to provide context for course names for prerequisites. Submit transcripts from all schools where college credit was received. This is especially important if you took prerequisite courses before transferring to the school from which you graduated. List all degrees received, not only the most recent.

1-page resume

The resume should include lists of relevant professional experience and contributions to the community through volunteering and service.

1-page statement of purpose

This should describe how this certificate program would help the prospective student reach their professional goals, in their current and/or potential future work. If the prospective student does not have an undergraduate degree in engineering, physics, or chemistry, include an explanation of how previous coursework or professional work has prepared them for this program.

Certificate eligibility

This certificate program is not eligible for F1/J1 international students who require an I-20/DS-2019 to enroll at UW. Non-U.S. citizens in the U.S. who do not require an I-20/DS-2019 to study and can be a student, can be admitted to the certificate. Students wishing to complete the online certificate while remaining outside of the United States are eligible to apply.

  • Complete all seven courses to earn the I-BEAM Certificate, or
  • Enroll in individual courses that align with your interests or immediate learning needs

Students who intend to complete the full certificate program are required to apply through the UW Graduate School application process.

Individual course enrollment

Students who wish to take a single course (or a few courses) without pursuing the certificate do not need to complete the Graduate School application. Instead, they may register through one of the following non-degree enrollment options:

Registers as a Nonmatriculated (NM) student

You should register as a nonmatriculated student (NM) if you plan to take courses for professional development, personal enrichment, or skill building and do not intend to apply the credits toward a specific UW graduate degree. Most people will fall into this category.

Register as a Graduate Nonmatriculated (GNM) student

You should register as a graduate nonmatriculated student if you plan to apply the credits you earn toward a specific graduate degree at the UW in the future. If you are later admitted to a UW graduate degree program, you can apply up to 12 credits earned as a GNM student toward degree requirements.
