In June 2017, the department approved a new Qualifying Exam policy. The exam you take depends on when you entered the ME Ph.D. program. Students who entered the ME Ph.D. program in autumn 2017 or later are required to take the new Ph.D. qualifying exam. Students who entered the ME Ph.D. program prior to autumn 2017 have the option to take either the old Qualifying Exam or the new Qualifying Exam.
